ABOUT TUI NA MASSAGE
What is Tui Na?
Tui Na uses therapeutic massage techniques designed to affect the energy of the body at deep levels. Thus in addition to the benefits of traditional Western massage it balances the energy of the body, smoothing its flow, creating space for the body to heal itself. Therefore it can address a number of health concerns beyond musculoskeletal problems. For those familiar with other forms of bodywork, Tui Na could be likened to a cross between Swedish Massage and Shiatsu. If you enjoy either of these, you will love Tui Na.
The healing power of Tui Na.
The massaging action of Tui Na smooths the flow of qi in the channels (see About Oriental Medicine). The flow of qi affects all of the body’s circulatory systems, namely blood, nerves, hormones and lymph. By restoring a healthy balanced flow of energy, the body and brain communicate more efficiently through the nervous system, the endocrine system more efficiently produces the hormones it needs, the lymphatic system more effectively defends against disease, and increased blood flow nourishes the cells invigorating the body.
Thus Tui Na is capable of addressing numerous health concerns. The list below is not exhaustive, but is offered as an indication of the breadth of conditions that Tui Na can treat.
Musculoskeletal Disorders: Scoliosis, frozen shoulder, sprains and strains, carpal tunnel, myofascial pain, low back pain or spasms, sciatica, muscle spasms and adhesions, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, TMD (Temporo-mandibular Joint Disturbances) Neck pain and stiffness, sports injuries, whiplash, soft tissues injuries (bruising and swelling).
Circulatory System Disorders: Angina pectoris, hypertension, irrhythmias, poor circulation (cold hands and feet).
Respiratory System Disorders: Asthma, chronic bronchitis, sinusitis, common cold.
Digestive System Disorders: Gastric or duodenal ulcers, gastroptosis, cholecystitis, constipation.
Reproductive and Ob/Gyn System Disorders: Infertility, sexual dysfunction, menstrual pain or irregularities.
What to expect
Tui Na literally means “push-grasp.” A typical Tui Na session uses various strokes along energy channels, as well as gentle shaking, stretching, and joint movements to stimulate and release the flow of qi (energy) and blood. Depending on the condition, certain points may be stimulated by pressing with thumbs or fingers. These acupressure points are the same as acupuncture points and are selected to rebalance and harmonize the flow of qi and blood through the organ channels to facilitate healing and prevent further injury. Occasionally, a topical ointment may be applied to enhance the healing of particular conditions. Tui Na can be used as a stand alone treatment, but is often used in conjunction with acupuncture and/or moxibustion since a combined approach is often the most effective.
During a Tui Na session the muscles relax so tension and pain are eased. The nervous system shifts into a deeply relaxed state which promotes self-healing and creates a sense of emotional well-being. Re-establishing the free flow of qi induces the circulatory systems to more effectively maintain our health, creating a feeling of vitality.
